Expert antenatal care for you and your baby

Antenatal care is the care you receive from healthcare professionals during your pregnancy. You will be offered a series of appointments here at Basuto Medical Centre with a view to sharing your care with your obstetrician or midwife. One of our GPs will check that you and your baby are well and we’ll also provide useful information to help you maintain a healthy pregnancy. This can include anything from healthy eating and exercise advice to answering any questions you may have.

Basuto Medical Centre is also happy to assist with any postnatal care that may be required.

How we can help with your antenatal care:

  • We can provide information on where antenatal care will be offered and by whom. This will include a choice of providers (where available) and information about antenatal screening.

  • We can provide referrals for additional antenatal screening – including scans and fetal abnormality screening tests.

  • Folic acid and vitamin D supplementation can be helpful during pregnancy – we can provide more information about this

  • Lifestyle advice including food hygiene and safe eating in pregnancy, smoking cessation, advice about avoidance of alcohol and illicit drugs during pregnancy.

  • Medication advice. We will review if it’s safe for you to continue taking any current medication throughout your pregnancy. We can also advise on the avoidance of over-the-counter (OTC) medication which can’t be taken at this time.
