Understanding ED
Common, treatable – and worth taking seriously
Erectile dysfunction is common, treatable, and often much easier to talk about than men expect. At Basuto, it is handled as a normal medical conversation with a GP who discusses these concerns regularly and discreetly.
It is also worth taking seriously as part of your wider health. Erections depend on healthy blood flow, so ED can sometimes be an early sign of changes in cardiovascular health, diabetes or hormone levels. Your GP will look at the full picture first, then discuss treatment options where appropriate.

Medication can be helpful, and we prescribe them where appropriate. But ED is best assessed properly, not treated in isolation. Checking blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose helps your GP understand why this may be happening, and which treatment is most likely to help.
Causes
What causes erectile dysfunction
ED can have several causes, including cardiovascular health, diabetes, hormone changes, medication side effects, alcohol, stress, anxiety, and relationship or psychological factors. Often, more than one thing is involved.
The pattern can be useful. A gradual change over months may suggest a physical cause, while a sudden change, or difficulty in some situations but not others, can point more towards stress, anxiety or other psychological factors.
Medication is also worth reviewing. Some blood pressure treatments and antidepressants can affect erections, and your GP can help you understand whether that may be relevant.
If your symptoms suggest a hormone-related cause, testosterone can be checked properly with fasting morning blood tests. The aim is to understand what is driving the problem, so treatment is better targeted and any wider health issues are picked up early.
Your appointment
What happens in the appointment
The appointment is a 30-minute private consultation with a GP, in a calm and discreet setting. Your doctor will ask when the problem started, how it has changed, your relevant medical history, medication, lifestyle, and whether stress or mood may be part of the picture. You will have time to talk properly, and your GP will be used to discussing these concerns.
Blood tests may be recommended to check cardiovascular risk, cholesterol, diabetes markers, hormone levels and thyroid function.
These carry an additional cost, explained before anything is arranged. A brief examination, including a blood pressure check, may be suggested where relevant.
You leave with a plan. That may be a prescription where clinically appropriate, lifestyle changes with a follow-up booked, further tests, or a referral to a specialist, where input would help. If a first conversation by video feels easier, that works too – your GP will say if an in-person visit is needed.
Treatment
Treatment options for erectile dysfunction
Treatment depends on the cause, and your GP will be candid about what is likely to help.
- Medication: ED medication can be prescribed where clinically appropriate after assessment, with the prescription included in your consultation fee and the medicine paid for at the pharmacy. Your GP will explain how to use them properly.
- Treating the underlying cause: where blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, hormones or medication side effects are contributing, addressing those is part of the plan.
- Lifestyle changes: practical, personalised advice on exercise, weight, alcohol, smoking, sleep and stress, which can support improvement alongside or instead of medication.
- Specialist referral: direct referral to specialist support where further investigation or treatment is needed, with the letter included in your fee.
Follow-up is with the same named GP, so the plan gets adjusted rather than restarted.

What an ED appointment costs
ED consultation
£160
30 minutes, in person or by video. Prescription and referral letters included.
Blood tests carry an additional cost where recommended, explained before they are arranged. Medication is paid at the pharmacy, as with any private prescription.
If ED is part of a wider picture you want followed up properly – cardiovascular risk, hormones, weight – membership makes ongoing care simpler: Access is £30 a month with appointments at £80, and Adult membership is £85 a month including 10 appointments a year.
Private and NHS
Seeing us alongside your NHS GP
You can be assessed here while staying registered with your NHS GP – nothing about booking privately affects your NHS care.
Some men simply want to be seen quickly; others prefer to discuss something this personal away from a practice where the receptionist knows their family. Both are good reasons, and there is no catchment area.
If ongoing treatment is better managed through your NHS GP, we can provide a letter summarising the assessment, with your consent.
Common Questions
Erectile Dysfunction FAQs
Can you prescribe ED medication?
Yes, where clinically appropriate after proper assessment. Your GP will discuss the options, explain how to use the medication effectively, and issue a private prescription included in your consultation fee. You pay the pharmacy for the medicine itself.
Will I need blood tests?
Often, yes. Blood tests help check cardiovascular risk, cholesterol, diabetes markers, hormone levels and thyroid function – factors that can cause or contribute to ED. They carry an additional cost, which your GP explains before arranging anything.
Is erectile dysfunction a sign of heart problems?
It can be. Erections depend on healthy blood vessels, so ED sometimes appears before other signs of cardiovascular disease or diabetes. That is why GP-led assessment includes blood pressure and, where appropriate, blood tests – most men will be fine, but it is worth checking.
Is the appointment confidential?
Completely. It is a standard GP consultation in a private practice – your records are confidential, and nothing about booking or attending indicates why you are here. Reception will never ask you to explain your reason for booking.
Can I discuss this by video first?
Yes. An initial discussion often works well by video, at the same £160 for 30 minutes. If examination, a blood pressure check or blood tests would help, your GP will suggest an in-person visit as the next step.
How much does ED treatment cost in London?
At Basuto, assessment is £160 for a 30-minute consultation, with any prescription included. Blood tests, where recommended, cost extra, and medication is paid for at the pharmacy. There are no packages or hidden fees, and no obligation to continue beyond the appointment.
What if the cause is stress or anxiety?
That is common, and it responds to treatment too. Your GP can help distinguish psychological from physical causes, offer practical advice, and refer you for counselling or psychological support where useful. Sometimes medication is used short-term while the underlying pressure eases.
Do I need to leave my NHS GP to be seen?
No. You can book directly, with no registration, referral or catchment area, and your NHS care continues as normal. Patients visit from Fulham, Parsons Green, Chelsea, Putney, Hammersmith, Battersea and further afield.
