How it works
GP care alongside your NHS maternity team
Your NHS midwife or obstetrician continues to lead your pregnancy care. Basuto sits alongside that care, giving you access to a GP when you need time to talk through symptoms, medication, anxiety, test results or questions that come up between maternity appointments.
Pregnancy often raises concerns that are not always urgent, but still need a careful answer. A 30-minute GP appointment gives you space to discuss what has changed, what is expected, and whether anything needs follow-up. It can also be helpful to see a doctor who knew your health before pregnancy and can continue to support you afterwards.
With your consent, we can share relevant information with your midwife or obstetrician so your maternity record stays complete. Some patients see us once in early pregnancy; others book appointments at different points across the nine months. Both are normal.

What we cover
What antenatal care at Basuto includes
Antenatal appointments at Basuto can cover most of the questions pregnancy raises between maternity visits:
- Early pregnancy support: confirming and dating questions, early symptoms, what to expect, and information about where antenatal care is offered and by whom – including your choice of providers and what the screening programme involves.
- Referrals for additional screening: scan referrals and fetal screening tests arranged privately where you want them, with the results explained.
- Pregnancy blood tests (read more): baseline and follow-up checks arranged at the practice.
- Medication review: whether your current medication is safe to continue in pregnancy, and which over-the-counter remedies to avoid – one of the most common and most valuable antenatal GP conversations.
- Supplements and lifestyle: folic acid and vitamin D guidance, safe eating and food hygiene, and support with stopping smoking or alcohol.
- Mental health (read more): our GPs are alert to anxiety and low mood during and after pregnancy, and can treat, support or refer as needed.
- Employment and maternity rights: advice and any letters your employer needs, prepared during the consultation.
Your appointment
What happens at an antenatal appointment
Pregnancy brings questions between scheduled maternity appointments, and many of them are exactly the sort of thing a GP can help with: symptoms, sleep, mood, medication, work, test results, or simply whether something sounds expected.
Your GP will review your history, current medication and any maternity notes you bring, examine you where clinically appropriate, and talk through the questions you want answered. If something needs arranging, such as a blood test, scan referral, pregnancy-safe prescription, or a letter for your employer or midwife, we will do that during the appointment wherever possible.
If your symptoms need urgent maternity assessment, your GP will explain this clearly and direct you to your maternity unit straight away.
Early pregnancy
Support in the early weeks
The first weeks of pregnancy are often the least supported. NHS midwife booking usually happens at around 8 to 10 weeks, and the wait can feel long, particularly if this is your first pregnancy or you have had a difficult experience before. A GP appointment can help fill that gap.
In early pregnancy, we can talk through symptoms and what is expected, review medication promptly, advise on folic acid and vitamin D, arrange early blood tests where useful, and refer for an early private scan if you would like one for reassurance or dating. Same-day appointments are usually available where capacity allows, because early pregnancy worries rarely arrive on schedule.
After the birth
Postnatal care and the 6-week check
Our care does not stop at delivery. We provide postnatal support for you – recovery, mood, feeding questions, contraception – and a full 6-week baby check for your newborn with the same practice that supported the pregnancy.
Many antenatal patients stay with Basuto after birth. Baby checks become childhood immunisations, then family GP care, often with the same doctors and the same practice team over time.
That is how Basuto has looked after Fulham families for more than three decades, and some of the children first brought to us now bring babies of their own.

Common Questions
Private Antenatal Care FAQs
Is private antenatal care a replacement for NHS maternity care?
No. Your NHS midwife or obstetrician leads your maternity care; we work alongside them, providing GP support between appointments and sharing relevant findings with your consent.
What can a GP help with during pregnancy?
Medication safety reviews, early pregnancy advice, symptom assessment, pregnancy blood tests, scan referrals, mental health support, supplement and lifestyle guidance, and employer letters. Essentially, the questions that arise between midwife appointments and need a doctor rather than a search engine.
How much do antenatal appointments cost?
£160 per 30-minute appointment, including any prescription and referral letters. Blood tests carry separate fees agreed in advance, and private scans are paid directly to the imaging provider we refer you to.
Can I be seen before my NHS booking appointment?
Yes. NHS midwife booking usually happens from around 8 to 10 weeks, and many patients see us earlier for medication review, supplement advice, early blood tests or simply reassurance. Same-day appointments are usually available where capacity allows.
Can you arrange pregnancy scans?
We refer you to trusted external imaging providers for private scans, including early reassurance and dating scans, and your GP explains the results with you afterwards. We do not carry out scans at the practice itself.
Will you talk to my midwife or obstetrician?
Yes, with your consent. We share relevant findings and letters so your maternity record stays complete, and we are equally happy receiving information from your maternity team. Shared care only works when everyone can see the picture.
Can you help with anxiety or low mood in pregnancy?
Yes. Our GPs are alert to mental health during and after pregnancy and can assess properly, support you, involve counselling or arrange onward referral where clinically appropriate. Please do not sit on these symptoms – they are common and treatable.
What happens after the baby arrives?
We provide postnatal care for you and a 6-week check for your baby, then ongoing family GP care if you want it – childhood illnesses, immunisations and continuity with doctors who already know your family.
