How it works
GP-led health assessment
A private health check should help you understand your health, identify relevant risks, and leave you with clear, practical next steps.
At Basuto, every health assessment begins with a thorough consultation. Your doctor will discuss your medical history, lifestyle, risk factors, symptoms and any specific concerns before recommending the most appropriate tests or screening.
Depending on your needs, this may involve a targeted blood test, a broader health screening package, or a more comprehensive review such as an executive health check, depending on what is clinically appropriate. The aim is to make the assessment relevant to you.

Why it matters
Why GP-led testing works better
A health check is most useful when it helps you understand the bigger picture: your risks, your baseline health, and any changes worth paying attention to.
At Basuto, your results are interpreted by a GP alongside your medical history, family history, lifestyle, symptoms and priorities. The aim is not simply to run tests, but to give you a clear understanding of your health and any sensible next steps.
Choose your route
Blood tests or health screening?
Blood tests are usually best when there is a specific question to investigate, such as fatigue, thyroid symptoms, hormonal changes, cholesterol, inflammation or ongoing symptoms that need clarification.
A health check is broader. It looks across several areas of health and is better suited to patients who want a more complete review of risk, prevention and long-term wellbeing.
.
If you are not sure which route is right for you, you do not need to decide before booking. Your GP can guide you towards the most appropriate option.
Your appointment
What happens when you book a health check
Your appointment starts with a GP consultation. Your doctor will talk through what you want to understand, review any relevant medical history and recommend the most appropriate tests.
Once your results are back, they are reviewed with you and explained clearly. You will have time to ask questions and agree any sensible next steps, whether that is reassurance, lifestyle advice, monitoring, further investigation, treatment or referral.
Results and follow-up
Results, follow-up and onward care
Health checks at Basuto sit within a broader general practice model. Depending on your results, the next step may be reassurance, a follow-up GP review, treatment, repeat testing, lifestyle advice, or referral for further investigation. Hormone-related concerns often connect to women’s health or men’s health pathways.
Metabolic or weight-related findings may link with weight management, and family health checks may involve children’s health alongside adult review. Investigation is more useful when it connects directly to a clinical plan – your GP can arrange specialist referrals, prescriptions, or follow-up consultations, all from the same practice.

Common Questions
Health Check FAQs
What blood tests do you offer?
We offer a wide and comprehensive range of GP-ordered blood tests, with the largest laboratories in the UK. These include full blood count, cholesterol and lipids, thyroid function, hormone panels, vitamin and nutritional testing, and broader preventive screening. If you are unsure which test is most appropriate, your GP will advise during the consultation.
How quickly do results come back?
Many results are available within 24 to 72 hours, depending on the test. Your GP will review the results, explain what they mean clearly, and advise on any next steps.
Do I need a GP appointment for a blood test?
Yes. Every health check or blood test begins with a GP consultation so the right tests can be selected and the results properly interpreted in context.
What is the difference between a blood test and a health screening?
A blood test is usually more targeted and used to investigate a specific question – thyroid symptoms, cholesterol, fatigue or hormone changes. A health screening package is broader and looks across cardiovascular, metabolic, hormonal and preventive markers. Your GP will help you decide which route is most appropriate.
Can you arrange specialist referrals based on results?
Yes. If your results suggest that you need further investigation or specialist support, your GP can arrange a referral directly from the practice.
How much does a health check cost?
A 30-minute GP consultation costs £160. The total cost depends on which tests or screening package are recommended during the appointment. Patients who expect to use the practice more regularly may find membership more cost-effective for ongoing monitoring and follow-up.
Do I need to fast before a blood test?
Some blood tests do require fasting, while others do not. If fasting is needed, we will tell you clearly before your appointment or test.
What happens if something abnormal shows up?
Your GP will explain what it may mean and recommend the next step, which could include repeat testing, monitoring, treatment or referral.
