How it works
How a private prescription works at Basuto
A private prescription at Basuto is issued by a GMC-registered GP during a consultation. The prescription itself costs nothing extra: it is included in your 30-minute appointment, whether that appointment is in person or by video. We can dispense most medication in-house, or alternatively you can take the prescription to a pharmacy of your choice – or we send it there for you – and pay the pharmacy for the medicine.
Prescriptions are issued when your GP thinks they are clinically appropriate. They will explain what the medicine is for, how to take it, and what to expect.
Repeat prescriptions
Repeat prescriptions without an appointment
If one of our doctors has prescribed your medication before and agreed it can be repeated, you can request further prescriptions without booking an appointment. Call 020 7736 7557 and tell us the medication, and either your preferred pharmacy or that you would like to collect from Basuto.
If you are worried about any aspect of your medication, or about side effects, please book to see a doctor rather than requesting a repeat – same-day appointments are usually available.
Repeat prescriptions are free for members. Non-members pay £30 per request. Every request is reviewed by a Basuto doctor before it is issued. Occasionally, your doctor may ask to see you before providing further repeats, for example if your blood pressure needs checking or blood tests are due. This helps make sure the medication remains safe and appropriate for you.
Medication reviews
Medication reviews and safe ongoing prescribing
A medication review is a consultation focused on whether your current treatment still fits the problem it was prescribed for. It is particularly worthwhile where medication has been taken for some time, where symptoms have changed, or where monitoring is normally required.
A review is to make sure treatment is still doing what it was prescribed to do. If further investigation would help, blood tests, referral or follow-up can be arranged through the same practice.
Some medications need periodic blood pressure checks, blood tests or clinical review before they can be safely continued. Others carry interactions or side effects that should be reassessed if your health has changed, or if new medication has been added by another clinician. Your GP can also review medication started elsewhere – privately, abroad or on the NHS – and advise whether it remains appropriate in the context of your wider health.
Video or in person
Choosing the right prescription appointment
Many prescription and medication review appointments work well by video, particularly where discussion is the main requirement – a video consultation is 30 minutes and £160, the same as in person. If examination, monitoring or testing is likely to be needed, an in-person appointment is usually more appropriate, and your GP will say so plainly.
If you need medication reviewed urgently, a same-day appointment is usually possible Monday to Friday, where capacity allows. If you are unsure which to book, call the practice and we will advise.
Pricing
What a private prescription costs
There is no separate charge for a prescription issued during a consultation.
Adult consultation
£160
30 minutes, in person or by video. Prescription included.
Child consultation
£140
30 minutes, in person or by video. Prescription included.
Repeat prescription without an appointment: free for members, £30 for non-members. The medicine itself is paid to the pharmacy at their price, as with any private prescription.
Members on Access, Adult and Under-18 plans all have prescriptions included as part of their consultations, and repeat requests between appointments are free. If you use the practice regularly for ongoing medication, membership usually works out simpler and cheaper.
Private and NHS
Private prescriptions alongside your NHS GP
You can hold a private prescription from Basuto and keep your NHS GP – the two work alongside each other, and booking with us does not affect your NHS registration.
Where it makes sense for ongoing treatment to move to your NHS GP, we can provide a letter summarising the assessment and the medication started, so your NHS record stays complete.
A private prescription is dispensed at the pharmacy at the medicine’s private price rather than the NHS prescription charge, which is why we tell you clearly when a medicine is likely to be expensive and whether a suitable alternative exists.

Common Questions
Private Prescription FAQs
How much does a private prescription cost in London?
At Basuto the prescription itself is free: it is included in your £160 consultation (£140 for children). You pay the pharmacy for the medicine at their private price. Repeat prescriptions without an appointment are free for members and £30 for non-members.
Can I get a repeat prescription without seeing a doctor?
Yes, for medication one of our doctors has previously prescribed for you and agreed to put on repeat. Every request is still reviewed by a doctor, and you may occasionally be asked to attend an appointment before further repeats – for example for blood pressure checks.
How do I request a repeat prescription?
Call 020 7736 7557 with the medication name, strength and dose, plus your pharmacy details or a note that you will collect. A doctor reviews the request and the prescription is then issued.
Can you send my prescription to any pharmacy?
Yes. We can send your prescription to your preferred pharmacy, or you can collect the medication from our in-house dispensary.
Can a private GP prescribe the same medication as an NHS GP?
Largely, yes. Our GPs can prescribe most licensed medicines where clinically appropriate, including antibiotics and ongoing medication. The difference is cost at the pharmacy: you pay the medicine’s private price rather than the NHS prescription charge.
Can you prescribe controlled drugs or strong painkillers?
Only with particular caution and after proper assessment. Controlled drugs, strong painkillers and some sleep medications carry specific prescribing rules, and your GP may need previous records, monitoring or an in-person review before prescribing. We will always explain the reasoning.
Can I get a prescription from a video appointment?
Yes, where clinically appropriate. Video consultations are 30 minutes and £160, and any prescription can be sent to your preferred pharmacy afterwards. If examination or testing is needed first, your GP will recommend an in-person visit instead.
Do you prescribe for children?
Yes. Children’s consultations are £140 for 30 minutes and include any prescription, whether for an acute illness or ongoing treatment. Repeat requests for children’s medication are reviewed by a doctor in the same way as adult requests.
