Our travel clinic
Travel health advice built around your itinerary
A travel consultation at Basuto covers three things together: where you are going, how you are travelling, and what your medical history means for both. Vaccine requirements, malaria risk, medication interactions and sensible precautions vary significantly by destination, and the right advice depends on all three.
The relevant risks change with the season of travel, whether you are staying in urban or rural areas, how long you will be away, and whether you are visiting friends and relatives. Your own background matters just as much: vaccination history, allergies, regular medication, pregnancy, immunosuppression and long-term conditions can all affect what is recommended and what can safely be prescribed.

Travel health works best when it is planned properly. Every travel consultation at Basuto is 30 minutes, giving your GP time to understand where you are going, how long you will be away, your medical history, previous vaccines, and any specific risks for your trip.
Your appointment
What happens at a travel clinic appointment
Your appointment starts with your trip: destination, dates, length and type of travel, accommodation, planned activities, and any questions you already have. Your doctor will then review your medical history, current medication, allergies, previous vaccines and, where relevant, pregnancy status or any condition that could affect what is recommended. From there, your GP will explain which travel vaccines or precautions apply to your destination, whether antimalarial medication is appropriate, and what wider health advice makes sense for the journey.
That may include insect-bite prevention, food and water precautions, altitude considerations, deep vein thrombosis risk on long flights, travelling with medication, or planning for children on the same itinerary.
You leave with a clear plan: which vaccines you need and when, any prescription arranged, and written advice where useful. If a follow-up dose is needed, we book it before you go home.
Timing
When to book: weeks before travel, not the day before
The ideal time to book a travel consultation is 4 to 6 weeks before you travel. Some vaccines take time to become effective, and some need more than one dose spaced days or weeks apart – a schedule that simply cannot be compressed into the day before a flight. Booking early also gives you options. If a vaccine course will not fit your departure date, your doctor can talk through what protection is still achievable and which precautions matter most.
If your trip is sooner than that, it is still worth booking. Antimalarials can often be started at shorter notice, single-dose vaccines may still be worthwhile, and practical advice on bites, food and water can meaningfully reduce risk even when the timeline is tight.
What we arrange
Travel vaccines, antimalarials and fit-to-fly letters
Most of what a trip needs can be arranged through the same consultation.
- Travel vaccines: destination-specific vaccines such as typhoid, hepatitis A and B, rabies and others, planned around your itinerary and vaccine history.
- Antimalarials: where medication is appropriate for your destination and medical background, your GP can issue a private prescription.
- Fit-to-fly letters: where clinically appropriate after assessment, including letters for airlines and travel during pregnancy.
- Travelling with medication: letters confirming prescribed medication for customs and airline purposes, and advice on carrying it safely.
- Family planning for one itinerary: adults and children seen for the same trip, with advice adjusted for each traveller – see our children’s health page for wider care.
If you also want routine, non-travel vaccinations such as flu or shingles, those are covered on our vaccinations page.
Who it helps
Who our travel clinic is for
Anyone travelling abroad can book, but the travel clinic is especially useful when the trip, or the traveller, needs a little more thought.
- Families travelling together on one itinerary, including babies and young children.
- Multi-stop or long trips, rural travel, trekking and altitude.
- Travellers with long-term conditions, regular medication or allergies.
- Pregnant travellers who want destination and vaccine advice specific to pregnancy.
- Anyone whose vaccine history is uncertain and wants it reviewed properly.
Because the travel clinic sits within a GP practice, your wider health can be part of the conversation. Your GP can review your itinerary, vaccine history, medical background and any medication or pregnancy considerations, then help you plan the right next steps for the trip.

Common Questions
Travel Clinic FAQs
How far in advance should I book a travel clinic appointment?
Ideally 4 to 6 weeks before travel. Some vaccines need time to become effective and some require more than one dose. If you are travelling sooner, it is still worth booking – antimalarials and practical advice can often be arranged at shorter notice.
How much does a travel consultation cost?
£160 for adults and £140 for children, for a 30-minute appointment including any private prescription and travel letters where clinically appropriate. Vaccines are charged separately per dose, and we confirm the cost before anything is given.
Which travel vaccines do I need?
That depends on where you are travelling, how long you are away, the type of trip and your medical history. Your GP will advise on what is relevant for your destination and plan doses around your departure date.
Can you prescribe antimalarials?
Yes. If antimalarial medication is appropriate for your destination and medical background, your GP can issue a private prescription during the consultation. The prescription is included in your consultation fee; you pay the pharmacy for the medicine.
Do you offer fit-to-fly letters?
Yes, where clinically appropriate after assessment. If you need a fit-to-fly letter or another medical certificate for travel, including for travel during pregnancy, this can be arranged as part of your appointment.
Can you provide travel vaccines for children?
Yes. We see babies, children and adults for travel health advice and vaccine planning, and families travelling on the same itinerary can often be seen together.
Do I need to register first?
No. You can book a travel consultation without registering with the practice, there is no catchment area, and booking privately does not affect your NHS GP registration.
Can you help if I am travelling with a medical condition?
Yes. Because the travel clinic sits inside a GP practice, your condition, medication and travel plans are assessed together – including interactions, supplies for the trip and letters for carrying medication.
